About the Event

We invite you to explore the wonders of Alberta’s prehistoric past. Be immersed in the thrilling world of dinosaurs with our museum and palaeontological site guided tours and educational program. Foster an appreciation of the natural sciences and the environment. Unleash your inner palaeontologist and embark on an adventure like no other!

Here's what awaits you at Devil's Coulee Museum:

·  Guided Museum Tours – A guided museum tour where students get to touch real fossils, learn the story of Wendy Sloboda and discover Canada’s first dinosaur nesting site.

·  Guided Palaeontological Site Tour – A guided tour of the dinosaur egg-nesting site - walk in the footsteps of dinosaurs and encounter real dinosaur fossils and nesting sites. Here students will get to see, touch and search for dinosaur eggshell fragments, microfossils, dinosaur bones, and learn the geology of the coulee.

 The tour is approximately 1 hour at the Palaeontological Site with 30 minutes travel time between the site and museum.

o  Extended site tours- Extended tours include footprints, various other nesting sites, clam beds, and various bone beds and adds an additional 1/2 hour walk to the basic guided tour. 

 Educational Programing Includes:

o  Fossil Casting: Students will get to make a plaster baby dinosaur footprints to take home. During this activity we teach the students about the uses of plaster in the field of paleontology.

o  Bone Bed Exploration: This activity, geared for the younger students allows the students to practice digging up dinosaur bones while learning how to handle the tools.

o  Dig Techniques: Students would get to learn and practice proper dig techniques used by paleontologists and palaeo-technicians. (Must be done in conjunction with Fossil Collection law, or explanation of the need of permits to dig). Digging would happen in a simulation bone bed.

o  Geology: Students would learn the geology of the Milk River Ridge, Southern Alberta and the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin.

o  Fossil Jackets: Students will learn how and why a fossil is jacketed before being transported from the dig site.

o  Laws of Fossil Collecting: Program leaders will teach the students about the laws around fossil collection in Alberta

DETAILS

  • This event is only open to Roots families.  
  • Recommended Ages: All Ages Welcome - Note the requirements for the coulee hike to ensure that participant can physically manage the hike (suggested anyone younger than 4 be in a backpack with the parent). 
  • Registration deadline date:  May 31, 2024, at midnight
  • Should guests bring lunch? Yes & bring LOTS OF WATER and snacks
  • Are younger (non-participating) siblings welcome? Everyone in attendance needs to purchase a ticket  
  • Arrival Time:  9:30am, the tour begins promptly at 9:45am
  • Refund Policy: no refunds past registration deadline of May 31st at midnight
  • Venue Waivers must be completed and submitted to the Tammy at TammyE@RootsHomeEd.com by May 31st in order to participate in this event. Adults must complete thier own form, but children/youth attending with the adult can be listed on the same form.  
  • Review proper venue etiquette with your children prior to arriving

READ BEFORE REGISTERING!

The site tour is done in a coulee, this means that the terrain can be difficult for some please note the following: 

  • Wear sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots with good grip (sandals, flip flops or slip on shoes will not be sufficient)
  • The path we take into the coulee is a deer path and can be very narrow, parts only allow for single file walking. Make sure that anyone participating can manage to walk independently and carefully.
  • Strollers & wheelchairs are not allowed on this hike, this is not a groomed path
  • The difficulty of this hike is moderate, come prepared with at least one water bottle per person and a high-energy snack.  Water bottles and snacks MUST be kept in a backpack so that hands are kept free at all times while hiking.
  • Bring a hat, bug spray & sunscreen
  • The temperature is at least 10 degrees hotter in the coulee than in the parking lot so come prepared
  • Families have the option to participate in the extended hiking tour, which will add an additional 1/2 hour to your hike time, be sure that everyone in your family can manage the extra hike as families must stay together for the tour. A parent is required to go with their child for the hike and must be within arms reach of their children at all times!

On behalf of my child, I/we hereby waive and release the Roots Christian Home Education Fellowship,The Father’s House Christian School and any Roots volunteer/facilitator/administrative staff of the Roots Christian Home Education Fellowship from any liability to my(our) children. I/We are fully aware of the risks and potential for harm involved in such events, and on behalf of our child, release from liability Roots Christian Home Education Fellowship (Roots), The Father’s House Christian School and waive any claims such minor may have as a result of an accident, mishap or negligence of the Released Party and/or and other party under or affiliated with the Released Party.

I acknowledge that I, the parent/guardian of the registered attendee/s agree to stay on site at the venue of the program, to oversee my child/ren for the duration of the program.  Should I not be able to stay at the venue with my child/ren, a handwritten note with my signature will be sent with my child and given to the program organizer, stating the adult who is staying on site and has agreed to be responsible for my child/ren for the duration of the program.
