About the Event

Preparing Your Kids for Real Life Using...REAL LIFE!

It's January and that means the fresh energy of the fall startup is over and the break during December is done. It also means it is time to take stock of your year plan. Do your kids still love learning or has your "school" become a tear-filled time full of stress and anger? Could it be that you are doing too many hours each week of formal lessons and maybe all you need is to move into a school plan that is rooted more in real-life than it is in traditional curricula? If something just does not feel right, if your kids seem resistant to learning, if you are tired of trying to get them excited about learning then maybe this session will bring some help and clarity.

Themes to addressed during this session include:

  • What are the three motivations for learning?

  • Why is text book learning so boring (for most people)?

  • What is the number one skill your kids need to have to survive the coming AI invasion of the job/career market and how can they learn it?

  • What kinds of real-life events constitute learning and how can they "count" as part of your child's education plan?

  • If real-life learning is my core curriculum then do I need to buy any kind of prepared materials?

  • What are 5 things every kid should do every day as part of a Real-Life education plan?

Common Questions about Support Group Meetings

What happens at support group meetings?

This is a time for Roots parents and children to come together to enjoy one another’s company while supporting each other on our homeschooling journey.  Our meetings follow a basic format of announcements, testimonies, main topic/ discussion and end with small group prayer time.  Coffee, tea, and snacks are provided for the parents only. Bring a snack for your child to eat in your vehicle on the way home.

Can I bring my children?

Absolutely, bring your children!

  • Ages 4 and under

These children will stay with parents in the parent room, please bring only quiet toys for your child to use. Roots will provide youth to help watch your children in the moms room.

  • Aged 5 & up

Children will be split into age-specific groups to participate in activities/games appropriate for their age.

Note that due to the space availability at each support group venue, children may be grouped differently.

Parents Please Note:

  1. Registration for the Didsbury meetings is not required but it is recommended, so we can have your name tags printed and signing in children can be expedited upon arrival. It also helps us to ensure we have the proper number of workers to kids’ ratio in each class.

  2. Make sure kids come dressed in proper clean indoor footwear for running (no flip flops or winter boots)

  3. Put all coats backpacks and extra shoes against the walls in designated classrooms to keep the hallways clear in case of an emergency.

  4. Bring labelled water bottles for children (due to allergies, please save snacks for the children for the drive home).

  5. Remind children to be respectful of the leaders and listen to the instructions being given. It is a more enjoyable experience when everyone listens!

  6. Take everyone to the washroom before signing them in at the check in table.
