Hands on History at the John Walter Museum

Let’s go back in time and see what life was like for pioneer families over 100 years ago! Students will examine how families took care of each other by baking on the wood-burning stove, churning their own butter, dipping candles, and problem-solving how to build their own home. Find out how communities worked together and shared resources by visiting John Walter’s general store. As we tackle these pioneer activities, we’ll compare them to some of our modern conveniences. This program takes place in John Walter’s 1875 and 1884 homes.

DETAILS

• This event is only open to ROOTS families.  

• Recommended Ages: Grades K-12 (this program will be a modified version of the original grade 1-3 program, which will suit the needs and interests of older students, as well as younger)

• Are younger (non-participating) siblings welcome? Worn babies only

• Any specific dress/attire required? No

• Should guests bring lunch? No

• Arrival Time: 9:15 am (meet at the visitor centre)

• Registration deadline date: February 27, 2026 at 11:59pm

• Refund Policy: No refunds past registration deadline of February 27, 2026

The museum shares a parking lot with Kinsmen sports centre. Parking is free.

Attendees will meet at the visitor centre at 9:15 am and then be split into groups.

Parents attending will be expected to facilitate a station with instructions provided. If there are too many parents in attendance, some may be asked to wait outside during the activities, as space is limited at some of the smaller houses.

PARENTS' HOUSEKEEPING

1. We need your assistance in ensuring that you and your children arrive at this event on time. This allows the classes to start in a timely manner.

2. Parents are responsible for transporting and supervising their children at all times. Should you not be able to stay, a letter with the parent signature, stating who is responsible for your child in your absence (an adult staying on site), must be given to the event organizer.

3. There are no refunds past the registration deadline unless a class must be cancelled due to lack of student enrolment.

4. Each child is encouraged to bring a labelled water bottle, as water fountains are not always available.

Students: Roots reserves the right to make final decisions regarding the acceptance of any student into the program. Students who do not demonstrate an attitude of cooperation and willingness to respect the rights and property of others will be dismissed after two warnings are issued. There will be no refund.

WAIVER

On behalf of my child, I/we hereby waive and release the Roots Christian Home Education Fellowship, The Father’s House Christian School and any Roots volunteer/facilitator/administrative staff of the Roots Christian Home Education Fellowship from any liability to my(our) children. I/We are fully aware of the risks and potential for harm involved in such events, and on behalf of our child, release from liability Roots Christian Home Education Fellowship (Roots), The Father’s House Christian School and waive any claims such minor may have as a result of an accident, mishap or negligence of the Released Party and/or and other party under or affiliated with the Released Party.

I acknowledge that I, the parent/guardian of the registered attendee/s agree to stay on site at the venue of the program, and if space allows in the classroom to oversee my child/ren for the duration of the program.  Should I not be able to stay at the venue with my child/ren, a handwritten note with my signature will be sent with my child and given to the program organizer, stating the adult who is staying on site and has agreed to be responsible for my child/ren for the duration of the program.
