About the Event
Roots families are invited to join us at Bar U Ranch for a full day of fun!
Cookhouse - Ranching became art by Charlie Russell working as a cowboy then developing into a world- famous western artist. George Lane, Bar U Ranch owner and Charlie Russel developed a friendship, while Charlie Russel was passing through the area. Charlie Russell painted “A Quest of Survival” in 1912, a lifesize bronze of this, this is located in the parking area of the Bar U Ranch Visitor Centre. Try your hand at painting this represents how events were depicted in art back in the 1800’s.
Ranch Office/Post Office - Fred Stimpson managed to persuade the Post Office Department to establish another Post Office (rather than just in High River) to be known as the Pekisko Creek Post Office, located at the North West Cattle Company’s Headquarters (Bar U Ranch). This program will talk about John Ware and how he could not read or write but how important it was. He would get help from his wife Mildred to write his letters. The Ranch Office was also the center for the community to come and visit with one another, gossip, and pick up and mail their letters and parcels. Each student will have the opportunity to write a postcard, address it to be mailed.
Art of Roping - Calf roping found it origins in the 18th century. Cowboys developed a technique to rope in order to handle calfs that require doctoring, tagging and branding. Student will learn how to handle a rope and throw onto a roping dummy.
Wagon Ride - hop on the Percheron Horse Drawn Wagon and learn the importance of the work horse.
It is important to dress for the weather. All students should have jackets, hats, gloves, sturdy shoes or boots and rainwear. In warm weather we suggest water, sunscreen, hats and insect repellent.
Due to potential hazards on the ranch site, including livestock, a creek and moving machinery, students must be supervised at all times.
