Lessons You can sign your child up for an hour long ski or snowboard lesson with Nationally ceritfied ski or snowboard instructors at the following levels:
- never ever
- beginner
- intermediate
- expert
During checkout, please select which level your child is at so we can book them an ability appropriate lesson. At the conclusion of each lesson, the students will receive instructions on which areas of Canyon they should remain and continue to practice the skills taught. We require a minimum of 5 children in our group for the resort to run a lesson for our group. If we have fewer than the minimum then these children would need to join with other groups or kids on the ski hill to complete their lesson at whatever times are available. There is small possibility (especially if you want an expert snowboarder or skier lesson) that there won't be enough other kids on the hill to make the minimum 5 to a run a lesson which means that child would not be able to have a lesson.
Canyon Ski resort understands there may be some group members who may have difficulty learning in a group setting and private lessons are required. This may be due to a mental or physical disability, or even behavioral issues. Please advise the field trip organizer of any special needs in advance so we can arrange a private lesson and/or proper equipment. Furthermore, for safety reasons, any child 5 and under must be taught in a private lesson.
ClothingDress appropriately for the weather conditions. You will be more comfortable if you dress in layers of non-restrictive clothing that can be altered as the temperature changes. Canyon ski resort recommend wearing:
- Warm, water-resistant jacket and snow pants
- Warm, water-resistant gloves/mitts
- Neck warmer or turtleneck sweater
- Long underwear
- Goggles or sunglasses
- Warm wool socks
- Toque or Hat
- Helmets are compulsory (and are included with the rental package)
Please ensure that you don't arrive any latter than 9:45, especially if you need to rent equipment. You may miss out on your lesson if you arrive too late. You will be given a lift pass on arrival in the lodge. Students needing rentals proceed downstairs to the rental shop. All others with their own equipment should head straight to the snow school meeting place to wait for lessons. After lessons students will be divided into groups and spend the rest of the day practicing their skis on the ski runs with a supervising parent.
RentalsAll students renting ski or snowboard boots will find their size marked on the shelves and foot wear can be stored in its place. Students receive their skis or snowboards from the work benches after getting their boots. Poles are not given out to Never Ever Skiers. After receiving their equipment, students will be fitted for a helmet, and should proceed to the exit. This is where parent or supervisor will record ALL their rental numbers. After renting, students proceed up the stairs, exit the door on their right to the snow school meeting place, where they will be divided up accordingly for their lessons in front of the appropriate sign.
SafetyReckless behavior, on and off the hill is serious and will not be tolerated. Canyon Ski Resort takes every measure to ensure that they meet the required safety guidelines for extracurricular activities, as outlined by Canada West Ski Areas Association and school boards. They are committed to providing the safest environments for learning skiing and snowboarding. As safety is their most important consideration, Canyon reserves the right to revoke the area pass of any participant for infractions of the Alpine Responsibility Code, Canyon’s rules, policies and regulations. Helmets are mandatory for all those participating in school groups, and are now included in the rental package. Please review the Alpine Responsibility Code and bring a signed waiver for each student.
Weather CancellationsIn the event of extreme weather conditions, this field-trip will be postponed to another day. The resort does not conduct lessons if the air temperature is below -25. The temperature at Canyon Resort is typically 3-6 degrees warmer than the recorded weather at Red Deer.
