About the Event

This is a 4-day program for students ages 5-18. Students will be split into age groups to help adapt programming accordingly in each class.  We are excited to offer a total of 6 different class options for students ages 6+, with 5 new instructors joining us this year. Due to the high demand for kindergarten options, we have added a full day program option with 2 instructors.

This program is for Roots families only (IF we do not fill all the seats by December 27th then we will open registration to Roots family friends)

Age 5: There are two options for participation this year for kindergarten students, a full day or 1/2-day program.  (This has been opened up to students aged 4 years old as of December 19th)

Ages 6+:  Pre-determined group arrangements have been made with each ticket.  You can choose the group to participate in when you purchase your ticket. Note that there is only room for a maximum of 15 students in each class, you cannot switch classes, but need to stay in the group you register with.

Parents: Are required to stay on site for the duration of the daily programming. We will need parental volunteers who have their police checks submitted to the office. If you do not have a police check but are willing to get one, Roots will send a volunteer letter and pay for the police check to be completed.

Ages 3 and under: Younger children can attend with you, there will be space in the nursery and a play area in the gym for you to supervise your child.  Younger children need to stay with parents at all times.

Kindergarten Classes:

There are two options for participation for kindergarten students.  The all-day program includes arts, crafts, stories & games with Lisa in the morning and then the afternoon is split between Angela and Lisa. The full day option is a 4-hour program.  The second option is a 1/2-day program (2 hours of instruction in the afternoon only), one hour with Angela and one hour with Lisa.

Lisa Mitchel has worked with children for many years and plans to give the children a variety of art mediums to experiment with, crafts, games, stories, and fun during the 4 days so classes. Lisa has worked with Roots students at our monthly support group.

Angela Squire has been teaching music to young and old for quite a few years.  She has been director of her church choir for 15+ years, worked with the homeschool band for 17 years and is an active part of her church music team.  For the past 2 years Angela has been teaching preschool music classes at a local Calgary Music Studio.  Angela combines 2 of her favorite things Music and young children as often as possible.

This week's music classes will encourage the children to combine singing, rhythm and movement.  We will use basic percussion instruments and body movement to reinforce basic musical patterns. We will be using a combination of familiar children's tunes, rhymes, and Sunday school tunes.

Ages 6+ classes  Students will participate in 4 of the 6 classes (there are limited seats in each classroom, so the tickets have been grouped to accommodate class sizes)

Pencil Sketching:  Garth Philpott (A Roots dad), is a 2016 graduate from the Alberta College of Art & Design with his bachelors in fine art, majoring in drawing. He is passionate about art history & finds his main source of inspiration there. Garth has worked hard towards his professionalism & name in the artist world & is creating art full time at his own studio, location in the Manchester industrial area in Calgary. He is excited and passionate to create a space where students can learn, excel & grow in their God given artistic gifts with the guidance & knowledge that Garth has acquired over the last 15 years of participating in the world of fine art.

In his class he will be teaching line drawing with pencil, as well as breaking down elements into simple forms. This will, upon completion, have your budding artist have a traditional Japanese scene within their portfolio. Garth’s artistic process has always begun with pencil on paper & through this fine arts week, will hopefully inspire the students to spark a love for simple, every day tools in their artistry. Student will complete their class with Garth with a Japanese style pencil/ink drawing.

The Theory of Color & Creation: Estefania Saldarriaga (A Roots mom)  was selected as the October 2022 Immigrant Council for Arts Innovation (ICAI) Artist of the Month. From CKUA Radio, Estefania came to Canada 15 years ago and has been involved in the arts for most of her life. she practices numerous art form including dance, theatre. paint, photography, and other visual arts. Saldarriaga's primary practice focuses on folkloric expressions through dance and music as well as teaching children the ability of expressing themselves through art and has been involved in various community projects including a couple of projects with the city of Calgary. Her personal approach to art is very dynamic especially when working with children. The students will do a different art project each day with a look on why things work the way they do as we explore the psychology of color. Estefania loves to incorporate a verse of the bible at the beginning of each class as inspiration for each piece.

Acrylic Portrait: Kristen Federchuk ASA, SCA, WAOW (Associate), (A Roots mom) is a professional working artist specializing in acrylic painting and a former P. Ag Environmental Science. Kristen has been painting and exhibiting her work since 2005 and more recently has begun instructing art classes, she particularly enjoys teaching children. Artists often study a subject before painting it. In this four-day acrylic painting class students will study about the Barn Owl (Tyto alba) focusing on a detailed studies of the feathers, beak, eyes, and different flying/standing positions. A touch of art history will be included in the course as students look at barn owl paintings by famous artists.

There will be several different reference photos available to work from which will enable each student’s artwork to be a unique subject study. Students will leave the 4-day class with a completed painting of the barn owl in a ‘Nature Study’ style.

Drama: Allison Froese (A Previous Roots Student ) I have a passion for drama and music and I believe that they are powerful tools that we can use to share the gospel. I was homeschooled grade 1 through 12 and spent 9 of those years with Roots. I went on to study drama at Bible school and music at the University of Lethbridge. Currently I live in Airdrie, AB and run a drama group for kids and adults with the mission of sharing the gospel.

Over the course of this drama class we will explore some of the fundamentals of drama and work on developing skills like expression, movement, and character. By the end of the week we will prepare a short skit to showcase the work that we have accomplished.

Gym: Benjamin Blake (A Roots Graduate), has led the gym program for the Roots support group meetings for many years and loves working with the children.  The gym time will give the students an opportunity to burn off energy while also enjoying some group games.
